Lidl resubmits plans to build new store at Morston Point in King’s Lynn alongside two drive-thru units

A supermarket giant has resubmitted plans to build a brand-new branch on the outskirts of town alongside two drive-thru units.

Lidl has taken a fresh look at Morston Point, between Greenyard Way and the Jubilee Roundabout in Lynn, as it prepares to erect its second town store.

The company had already lodged plans to take over the site back in 2018. However, it later withdrew its interest, leaving Aldi to take hold of the development.

Earlier this year, Aldi bosses revealed a construction plan of 50 weeks – but nothing was ever built, and the planning consent expired in April.

Now, Lidl has submitted a full planning application for a new branch consisting of a 2,268 square-metre store with 117 parking spaces, creating around 40 jobs for the town.

In addition to this, outline planning permission is being sought to create two new drive-thru units on the site, which are expected to generate a further 20 to 30 jobs.

It is not known what businesses will be housed inside them, but Lidl has confirmed that several operators have already expressed interest.

“The drive thru units are being pursued on a speculative basis, though interest has been expressed for the future occupation of these plots by several operators,” a planning and retail statement says.

“The scheme will secure the development of an under-utilised plot of land in an accessible location,” it adds.

Meanwhile, a design and access statement says: “The proposed scheme seeks to bring a new food store to Lynn, providing greater food store choice to local communities.

“This proposal will be constructed to a high quality with sensivity to the local environment, employing contemporary and sustainable design and materials to create an attractive, high quality building which is appropriate to its surrounding built environment.

“The proposal utilises its locality to ensure good accessibility and promote sustainable transport methods.”

The plans are now set to go out for consultation.
