Residents are celebrating after the installation of a permanent bus shelter outside a health centre.

The stop has been put in place outside the Gayton Road Health Centre in Gaywood, funded through Cllr Rob Colwell’s local county council member fund.

He said the process of having it installed was “challenging”, with previous attempts thwarted by concerns from a local cycling group.

Cllr Colwell said: “This site outside Gayton Road Health Centre has needed a bus shelter for too long. I’ve persevered to make sure this happened.

“Paid for via my local member fund, it’s something I’m proud of. I hope it comes in useful, especially for infirm and elderly residents who are now forced to travel for a GP following the terrible closure of the Fairstead surgery”.

This is the second new bus shelter in Gaywood in as many months following the installation in Fairstead outside Churchill Park Academy.

Cllr Colwell added: “I aim to install new bus shelters across Gaywood over the coming years as quickly as my limited budget allows me. I’m also pushing hard for upgrades of existing shelters.”

The county council secured funding from the Department for Transport for its bus service improvement plan, and councillors can make applications for shelters as part of this scheme.
