North West Norfolk MP’s sixth London Marathon will support charity close to his heart

An MP is lacing up his shoes for his sixth London Marathon – raising money for a charity close to his heart.

North West Norfolk MP James Wild will be among the thousands pounding the capital’s streets on Sunday, April 26 for the TCS London Marathon where he will be supporting Lynn-based charity, The 8:56 Foundation.

The charity’s mission is to support men’s mental health. It was founded in memory of popular local man Lee Calton who lost his life to suicide in April 2021 aged 37.

The foundation was created in response to the rising and often hidden crisis in men’s mental health. More men are struggling with loneliness, silence and a lack of accessible support.

The foundation exists to change that – raising awareness, increasing the visibility of help available, and challenging the stigma that still prevents many men from speaking openly about their mental wellbeing.

Through sport‑based community programmes, wellbeing initiatives and accessible talking therapy, the foundation works to create safe spaces where men feel able to talk, connect and seek support before reaching crisis point. Demand for these services continues to grow, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable funding and wider awareness.

Mr Wild said: “Running is really important to my mental and physical wellbeing – it helps me get out, take some time away, and blow away the cobwebs. Although I said I wouldn’t run the marathon again, I’m delighted to be running this year in support of The 8:56 Foundation, who do such important work raising awareness for men’s mental health across West Norfolk.

“Having lost a friend who tragically took his own life, I know the work they do through their Time to Talk campaign and community programmes makes a real difference locally, and I’m very grateful to everyone who sponsors me to help raise vital funds. Every £35 raised funds a therapy session for someone who really needs it.”

Abbie Panks, a trustee for the foundation, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to James Wild MP for choosing to run in support of our mission. The need for mental health support is increasing, and every £35 raised funds a therapy session that can be life‑changing for someone who needs it.

“Our work is built on awareness, prevention, and support – and we simply couldn’t do it without the runners, fundraisers, and volunteers who stand with us. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has chosen to run for us and champion men’s mental health.”

A spokesperson said the foundation thanks all supporters who continue to help drive its mission forward and ensure more men feel seen, supported, and able to talk.

The money raised will support the foundation’s Talking Therapy programme.
