West Norfolk councillor Alexandra Kemp lodges shock complaint against deputy leader and mayor
A councillor has lodged a shock complaint against her authority’s mayor and deputy leader following a row over the possible sale of council assets.
However, the deputy leader of West Norfolk Council, Simon Ring, has insisted that the assets in question – a motorhome site and a community charity base – will not be sold.
The council is in the process of reviewing its assets, looking at what land and property it owns and evaluating how much they are worth.

At last Thursday’s full council meeting, Cllr Alexandra Kemp voiced concerns about the Hardwick Bridge Residential Park and the Lynn Men’s Shed being valued – fearing residents and members could be forced to leave.
However, Cllr Ring has since moved to reiterate that just because a council has an asset valued does not mean it is planning to sell it.
Cllr Kemp saw red during the meeting when Cllr Ring said that she was spreading “misinformation” about the authority selling off assets.

Cllr Kemp was ordered to leave after she began shouting at Cllr Ring when he and West Norfolk mayor Andy Bullen agreed the topic should not be discussed in the public domain.
Cllr Kemp has since told the Lynn News she has lodged a complaint against Cllr Ring and Cllr Bullen.
“I would not put up with it if it were happening to a resident,” she said.
“It was really like something from a dictatorship. We try our best for our residents, and when you come to council, it is like World War Three.”

Cllr Ring has assured the 68 residents who live on the Hardwick Bridge park about the valuation process and has attempted to put any fears at ease.
“People in Hardwick Park will not have their rights affected negatively,” he said.
Cllr Ring, who has a background in business, told the Lynn News it would not be financially viable for the council to sell off the residential park.

The Men’s shed was also up for discussion, as Cllr Deborah Heneghan asked a question about the future of the charity’s base on Austin Street.
Cllr Ring confirmed that the charity has been working with the council to find new accommodation.
“The Men’s Shed does amazing work, and we have been working with them for some time to find them better accommodation,” he said.
“These guys are fantastic and say they will look after it, which is great – but we are a council, we have the law to follow. We cannot give them a long lease or tenancy when we cannot get an Energy Performance Certificate on the building.
“The building next door is literally falling down. We have been working with them for some time on this, and we will rehome them in one or two of our empty properties.
“That is the process that should be done behind closed doors without disturbing and worrying them.”
However, Cllr Kemp remains adamant that the charity has received “shabby treatment” from the borough council.
She claims she has been informed by Men’s Shed members that they were told in December to leave their current premises by April this year.
“It would be completely wrong for the borough council to continue this shabby treatment of a key charity in the borough,” she said.
“The council should treat key charities in the borough, as well as councillors who speak up against wrong courses of action, with proper respect.
“The Men’s Shed has a key role in men’s wellbeing and the prevention of male suicide, and provides a borough-wide service.
“The borough’s behaviour has fallen far short of what residents expect. More councillors need to speak out against what is not right.”
A borough council spokesperson said the authority cannot comment on a code of conduct complaint as it must have “due process followed fairly and in accordance with the law”.
