King’s Lynn thief Luke Paget back in court hours after prison release for stealing £180 worth of coffee and gammon

A man who stole £180 worth of coffee and gammon from a petrol station appeared in court just hours after being released from prison.

Luke Paget, 37, of Lowfield in Fairstead, was spotted on CCTV at the Tesco Express garage in South Wootton on two occasions, picking up goods and dashing.

The first took place on September 26, when he stuffed ten gammon steaks worth £48.50 into his puffer jacket and left.

The second happened days later, on October 2, and he snatched coffee, worth £131.90, before cycling away.

Paget pleaded guilty to the offences at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, having only been released from prison that morning for a separate matter.

Prosecutor Jenny Holt called him a “prolific offender” as he had 38 previous convictions to his name.

In mitigation, solicitor George Sorrell told magistrates that there was “not much” he could say about Paget’s actions.

“It’s appalling, and he’s ashamed of it,” he said.

Paget was handed a compensation-only order and will have to reimburse Tesco for the stolen goods.
