King’s Lynn woman Summer Mace ‘devastated’ that Aurelijus Cielevicius could be released from prison early after fatal A47 crash

A Lynn woman has said she is “devastated” by the possibility that the man whose dangerous driving killed her mum, step-dad and sister could be released from prison early.

Having served just three years of his 10-and-a-half-year sentence, Summer Mace has been told that Aurelijus Cielevicius could soon be let out and deported back to Lithuania.

The crash happened on the A47 Constitution Hill, between Lynn and Middleton, on January 15, 2023, after the then-39-year-old had taken a cocktail of drugs, with his actions causing the deaths of Paul Carter, 41, Lisa Carter, 49, and her daughter Jade Mace, 25.

Summer Mace said the news of Cielevicius’s potential early release was “despicable”.

“It’s so wrong, he should have to serve his whole sentence,” she said.

“If he’s deported, he’s going to be free. He’d be removed from this country, but he’s not served the sentence.”

Miss Mace also feels that she and her family have been “failed by the justice system” at every stage – before the crash, as Cielevicius was on a curfew, by his sentence, and again now.

“Obviously, for us, we were already so disappointed with the sentence he got and we tried to appeal it,” she said.

“It’s a constant kick in the gut really.”

Miss Mace said she and her relatives were told late last year that Cielevicius could be eligible for the early release scheme after he had served three years, which would be in January.

“Only certain crimes are excluded from that, but it’s beyond me that he killed three people and that’s not severe enough.”

With January being the month of the crash and also Jade’s birthday, the family pleaded for the killer not to be let out then.

But Miss Mace now refreshes her emails “multiple times a day” waiting to hear if and when he will be out of jail.

The family are calling on the Government and the Ministry of Justice to re-examine the criteria for the early release scheme.

“The Government want to free up prison space, but that doesn’t mean we need to harm people who are already suffering. You need to find a different route – that’s not fair,” Miss Mace said.

“It feels like people-pleasing, as lots of people are angry about immigration, but this is not the way to people-please, by playing with other people’s lives – that’s what it feels like.

“We are not being thought of at all.”

Despite this, she is “not hopeful” that anything will change, as their bid to appeal Cielevicius’s sentence back in 2024 was unsuccessful.

Miss Mace said she will “never forgive” Cielevicius, as the consequences of his dangerous driving meant that she was unable to kiss her mum goodbye.

“I always say it wasn’t just that he killed them, he destroyed them.

“I have been through finding out everything about the crash to understand what happened.

“I couldn’t even say goodbye to my mum, he destroyed her face in that crash, and I will never forgive him for that. I couldn’t even kiss my mum goodbye.”

She added: “All I can think is that he can going to be free to go to the shops, he can do this and that and have fun, and my family can’t do that.

“My family will never be free again, I have a life sentence and I will never get away from that. They were my family, he’s taken that away from me.”

It comes as North West Norfolk MP James Wild brought the case up at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday and asked for action to be taken to stop Cielevicius being released.

Mr Wild said: “My constituent’s mum, sister and stepfather were killed in a horrific dangerous driving crime and the foreign national offender was sentenced to 10 and a half years, but the family have just been told that he may be released imminently in order to be deported, having served just three years.

“Will the Prime Minister look at this case and what steps can be taken to prevent that release, given such a pitiful service time?

“Three years for three lives would be the final insult and undermine public confidence in our justice system.”

In response, Sir Keir Starmer described it as a “terrible case” and said it would be looked into “as quickly as possible”.
