Football fan banned after King’s Lynn disruption appears in court after failing to surrender passport to police for England matches

A banned football fan found himself in court after failing to surrender his passport before two England matches.

Jamie Burgin was handed a football banning order (FBO) for his part in crowd trouble following the New Year’s Day match between between King’s Lynn Town and Boston United in 2023.

Among the requirements of his FBO, the 21-year-old bricklayer must hand his passport into police ahead of all England matches, ensuring he would not be able to travel to away fixtures.

However, Boston magistrates were told Burgin failed to do this for the Three Lions’ away trips to Serbia on September 9 and Albania on November 16 of last year.

“On these two occasions he simply forgot,” said solicitor Chris Hogg in mitigation.

“He has one month left of his three-year FBO. There have been no previous breaches – he has complied up until these occasions.”

Prosecutor Marie Stace explained that Burgin received the FBO at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on February 23, 2023.

“It was in relation to disorder at The Walks stadium where a group of people were fighting,” she said.

“There were 17 people involved in that case.

“CCTV showed Mr Burgin to be exhibiting threatening behaviour and entering the pitch.”

Ms Stace added that police had “no concerns” that Burgin would have travelled to the two England games, or have posed any threat.

Burgin, of Bayswood Avenue in Boston, pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to comply with a banning order when he appeared in court last Friday.

He was handed a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £26 victim surcharge.

Seventeen football fans who were involved in the clash appeared in court to be charged for their offences in early 2023.

The incident involved fans punching each other and behaving in an “aggressive” manner while making their way onto the pitch.

Seven Lynn and ten Boston supporters were handed varying sentences – ranging from unpaid work and fines to bans from going to any football matches.
