Eat My Words: Christmas meal at The Lattice House in King’s Lynn left Lynn News team delighted

To say the Lynn News team left suitably stuffed after a delicious Christmas meal at The Lattice House would be an understatement.
It’s been a superb few months for the historic Lynn pub since it reopened, with a new focus on top quality food finally proving to be a winning formula at what is one of my favourite venues.
We’d pre-booked a festive party spot, putting in our starter and dessert orders beforehand and then being treated to a wonderful carvery on the night.

The place was absolutely bouncing when we turned up last Friday night, which is always good to see. Given that, staff members were running about like mad making sure everyone was happy – and we certainly were.
I could ramble on, but I’ll let our others team members speak for themselves. They are journalists, after all.
But first, my meal – it was extremely nice. The soup was salty but tasty, and the carvery was excellent. It’s one of those where I wish I could go back without having drank six beers already so I could actually finish it.

There were four different meats to choose from, and I opted for ham. It was stunning – perfectly juicy – and was nicely accompanied by pigs and blankets, stuffing and fresh vegetables.
Extremely unfortunately, my Terry’s chocolate orange brownie was a step too far. It was mouth-wateringly good, but I simply had no room.
Well, I did – but it was reserved for more beer.

So what did the rest of our team think?
“It’s no secret that The Lattice House is a pub favourite among many of the Lynn News team,” Alice Hobbs says.
“Steeped in history and very reasonable in price, we do like to poke our noses in when we can. However, most of the visits are purely for drinking, so our experience with their food was limited.
“We were not disappointed at all. It was great to see it packed full of people, and our plates were towering with Christmas carvery choices.

“My only regret was not leaving quite enough room for dessert, a boozy Baileys trifle – but that doesn’t take away from how tasty it was.”
Lucy Carter says: “I was impressed with the plant-based options, particularly the delicious and rather large nut roast. It was a hearty choice and I was impressed with the array of veg on offer.
“The millionaires tart was soft and silky, and I just about had room to polish it off after a huge main!”

Meanwhile, sports editor Greg Plummer says: “Having ended up kicking myself after opting for the prawn cocktail rather than the delicious-looking leek and potato soup, the carvery more than made up for my initial disappointment.
“The Lattice House delivers generous portions of well-cooked meats, heaps of fresh veg and rich gravy and it was just perfect.
“The Baileys chocolate trifle was also out of this world, even if I was a little full and the time of consumption.”

Editor Jeremy Ransome adds: “The pub went out of its way for the three vegans in our group, with a leek and potato soup full of flavour for our starter, a beautiful nut roast for the main, complete with vegetable gravy, and a lovely chocolate dessert.
“The amount of ‘trimmings’ with the main was absolutely superb, and it was not possible to complete my full plate!”
Molly Nicholas is just as pleased, saying: “It is safe to say I will be returning for a carvery at some point.
“My leek and potato soup was divine, with bursts of flavour accompanied by bread to dunk in. It was a great size to build you up for the main.

“The carvery did not disappoint. With a roast being my favourite dish, I do have to say it was delicious and included all the added trimmings.
“To finish off the three-course meal was a boozy Baileys trifle – this was not my cup of tea. Although it was alright, it was not as I expected it to be – it was more like a cake than a gooey trifle.”
Rebekah Chilvers rounds things off, saying: “It was great to see The Lattice House full of Christmas partygoers on Friday, which created the perfect festive atmosphere as the place was abuzz during our meal.
“The highlight of the dinner for me was the carvery. The nut roast paired brilliantly with the huge number of veggies on offer, which were all absolutely delicious.

“It was also great that the staff were on hand to offer us Brussels sprouts without bacon so we didn’t miss out on one of the season’s most iconic side dishes!
“The millionaire’s tart would have been the star of the show on any other day, with its rich, chocolate filling on sweet pastry base and accompanied by crushed pistachios, but after the roast, I was gutted to only manage half of it.”
Our verdict is clear – The Lattice House’s Christmas meals were something special. We’ll certainly be back!
