An ex-prisoner was arrested just two days after his release when police spotted him shouting and screaming inside an off-licence.

Ryan Coventry, 29, who lives in homeless accommodation in Lynn, was set free from jail on November 21 after serving a 14-day sentence for battery.

Just two days later, he was placed in handcuffs following an incident on London Road.

On Thursday, at the town’s magistrates’ court, Coventry was handed an £80 fine, a victim surcharge of £32 and court costs of £55, having guilty to threatening behaviour and possession of cannabis.

Prosecutor Jessica Neequaye said the defendant visited the police station at around 10.40pm and attempted to jump over a barrier to the yard.

Unsuccessful, he rushed off down the road to Carders News & Off-Licence, where he began shouting and screaming.

Officers eventually caught up with Coventry and arrested him. They found 0.8g of cannabis in his trouser pocket.

In mitigation, solicitor Tiffany Meredith said the defendant had been at a friend’s house that evening, and believes his beer was spiked.

“The reaction he had was nothing like he had ever felt before,” she said.

“He thought people were chasing him, so he went to the police for help.”

She added that when he failed to get any assistance at the station, he ran into the shop.

“Clearly, he had something in his body that didn’t go with the state that he was in at the time,” Ms Meredith said.
