Fate of King’s Lynn’s bootleg Banksy is up in the air as Wetherspoon confirms it is in ‘secure storage’

Questions remain over what will happen to Lynn’s bootleg Banksy as a pub confirms it remains in ‘secure storage’

The art piece depicting William Shakespeare holding a tin of spray paint popped up on a set of white doors owned by The Globe Hotel in Lynn on Monday, February 2, and was initially suspected to be the work of the world-renowned graffiti artist.

However, days later, the doors were removed after officials confirmed it was a fake.

While a staff member from the pub told the Lynn News that it was taken down “because it’s not real,” a spokesperson for Wetherspoon claimed it was done “as a security precaution”.

Now, the company has said: “It is currently in secure storage pending internal discussions on what we want to do with it.”

When the art piece was first taken down, many were disappointed by the decision.

One person said: “It was good enough to be considered a possible Banksy, not just any old graffiti.

“What an absolute shame that it’s not appreciated as much just because it’s not a Banksy. I don’t think that should devalue it.”

Another added: “How ridiculous. Why not leave it there? It’s not like the building is a palace.

“Just because it wasn’t a Banksy doesn’t mean it wasn’t good graffiti, and it certainly gave people in King’s Lynn something to get excited about.”
