Successful start as King’s Lynn’s Nurture Café launches to support families with young children

It was a morning of success for a new scheme launched to support parents and carers with young children.

The launch of the Cornerstone Nurture Café at South Lynn’s Baptist Church was described as a “hugely positive and encouraging” morning.

Many parents and caregivers gathered in the church to engage in relaxed conversations and receive support from the professionals and volunteers on hand.

It is aimed at those who are pregnant, parents, carers and those preparing to welcome a newborn into their lives. It will be a “judgement-free space, whether you are thriving, exhausted, full of questions, or just need to see a friendly face”, the church has said.

The opening event was described as being “full of conversation, laughter and connection, along with more serious and meaningful discussions”.

The scheme is to help families with young children to seek help and advice without having to face a long wait.

Cornerstone pastor Revd June Love was pleased with the turnout and said that parents were quick to use the café’s drop-in model.

The café is run with the help of health professionals, volunteers and other supporters.

One of them is county and borough councillor Alexandra Kemp, who has allocated some of her councillor funding to help supply food and drinks at the café.

“One of the strengths evident from the very beginning was the freedom to simply turn up, without appointments or waiting lists,” Revd Love said.

“This allowed families to ask questions, share concerns, and seek reassurance in a calm, non-clinical environment.

“Conversations ranged from everyday parenting experiences to more focused discussions with professionals, highlighting the value of accessible, face-to-face support.”

The café offered free fruit, yoghurt, sugar-free rusks, toast and biscuits for adults and children. Tea and coffee were also available, with a small voluntary donation invited for speciality coffees, along with homemade cakes and scones.

Cllr Kemp said: “The aim of this important new initiative is to bring help to parents when they need it, right in the community.

“Without the need to navigate through the minefield of online info. This is early intervention and prevention at its best.”

This event will be taking place every Tuesday from 8.45am-11.15am.

Revd June added: “Looking ahead, the café will continue to build on this strong start.

“Next Tuesday, health visitors will be on site to support families with any developmental questions.

“They will also be available to weigh babies and toddlers, answer queries, offer reassurance, and signpost parents and carers to ongoing support where needed.

“Our hope is that the Nurture Café continues to grow in confidence and reach, becoming a trusted weekly space offering friendship, support and connection for families across Lynn.”
