Plans for new takeaway in ‘deprived’ King’s Lynn neighbourhood rejected over health concerns

A bid to convert an empty off-licence into a takeaway has been rejected due to concerns for residents’ health.

The plans to turn the former Bargain Booze store on Lynn Road in Gaywood into a takeaway were lodged with West Norfolk Council back in September.

However, the application was thwarted by planning officers on Tuesday, who fear there is already a “high level of health deprivation” in the area and that the loss of a retail facility would “detract” from the area.

As it stands, there are already nine takeaways near the premises.

An officer’s report said that there is a “lack of acceptability” of hot-food takeaways within walking distance of a school, which in this case, includes King Edward VII Academy (KES) and King’s Lynn Academy (KLA).

“Overall, Lynn and West Norfolk’s healthy weight is below the average of local authorities, with obesity in children at Reception, Year 6, and adults above England’s average,” they said.

It highlighted that the area is already 91% more deprived than the average neighbourhood in England, and there are only 4% of neighbourhoods in Lynn and West Norfolk which are worse off.

It is unclear what the takeaway would have been serving, had it been approved.
