Picture This column with King’s Lynn museum focuses on Black North Sea by artist Jeffrey Camp

In its fortnightly Picture This column, Lynn Museum focuses on a painting donated to the organisation in the 60s.

Black North Sea by Jeffrey Camp is a painterly depiction of a sea view, deepened with dark grey clouds, bright green trees and pink houses adorning the forefront.

This painting shows the life and vibrancy of the Suffolk coastline.

Camp, who died in 2020, aged 96, had a keen interest in water, with seascapes becoming essential in his image-making.

In an interview with art writer Andrew Lambirth, he said: “The activity of birds and sky and sea is somehow joyous and helps towards happiness.”

Bought from his first solo show at Beaux Arts Gallery, the Contemporary Art Society presented Black North Sea to Lynn Museum in late 1961.
